evaporation : absorption

SITE Salinas De Janubio, Lanzarote

The cultural landscape of Lanzarote is currently masked by mass tourism. The design based on the concept of evaporation and absorption, derived from the necessary conditions and processes for salt production, also provides a design analogy for human use to be accomplished. Evaporation suggests human use as transitory whilst evaporation is connotative of nurturing and healing.

The new design will educate through recreation and observation to value the traditional productions and the resulting ecology. The aim here is to activate an alternative perception of Lanzarote by reinstating its cultural landscape. Having looked critically at the tourism model set out by artist/ architect César Manrique and the philosophy to harmonise the landscape with both design and tourism, this project aims to achieve a successful balance of respect, experience of the landscape through design and non- static preservation.
